Last week I was fortunate enough to attend this event from SHRM in Silicon Valley. I attend many conferences but found this one to be quite different and interesting.
First, I wouldn’t even call it a conference. Limited to 30 participants, we were provided the intimacy that is impossible with regular conferences. We were a very diverse group – participants from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Belgium and the Philippines attended. Focused on senior leadership in companies large and small in a wide variety of industries, interaction with fellow attendees was very enlightening.
Lasting a full week, we went by coach to many familiar companies including Google, LinkedIn, Uber, Genentech, SAP and Degreed. Additionally, we had presentations from Facebook and Robert Half International. Though the underlying theme was on innovation in HR, the presentations approached innovation in:
- Change Management
- Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging
- People Analytics
- Talent Management
- Learning & Development
Most of these organizations have been going through significant challenges (Google becoming part of Alphabet, LinkedIn being bought by Microsoft, Uber’s leadership turnover) so there was plenty of opportunity for them to approaches these issues through innovative approaches. Additionally, there was ample opportunity for Q & A, which we took full advantage of.

All-in-all, it was a very rewarding week and a program that I highly recommend. SHRM is planning on another HR Innovation Experience in October in Seattle – I’ll be sure to let you know more about that as plans get formalized.
